The Jeff Davis Parish School Board has decided to eliminate French classes for elementary school students. The board voted 9-3 last night to cut French classes beginning next year for students in Grades 7 and lower. Superintendent David Clayton says the board also considered cutting elementary art and music classes, but those were spared.
According to Clayton, the cuts were needed to offset payments into the state's retirement system. He says the school system will pay nearly $2.7 million more in retirement next year due to state mandates. Clayton says the cuts will eliminate between 11 and 14 positions, but most of the affected teachers will be reassigned to other classes.
