Scam Alert: Nigerian 419 Scam

Opelousas Police are investigating possible scams in the area. The police department have tracked these scam artist to Nigeria, and they are targeting pre-paid debit cards.

Nigerian scam 419 is the process where the victim receives an email stating that they have won a lottery. The scam artist then request the victim to purchase a pre-paid or "Green Dot" card and meet a representative at a local banking institution. The representative never shows up to meet the victim, but instead calls them to acquire the pre-paid card numbers, and completes the scam. The scammer then takes this information and loads it on a pre-paid card purchased anywhere in the world and is able to use those funds at will.
