Savoy Leads Cajun Linksters at Old Waverly

The Ragin' Cajuns golf team used a strong performance by senior Ethan Savoy to move up two spots on the final day of the Old Waverly Collegiate Challenge to finish in ninth place at Old Waverly Golf Course on Tuesday.

"I'm very proud to see our guys post the low round of the day," head coach Theo Sliman said. "Hopefully it will be a confidence boost headed into conference play. Ethan had really stepped up and answered the call today. I can't be more proud of him. His career is coming close to its end, and he has done a good job of not letting the pressure of that get to him."

Savoy notched a round of two-under par (70) to earn his second career top 25 finish placing in a tie for 13th with a three-round score of two-over (218).

As a team, the Cajuns posted the lowest round of the day at one-over (289) to jump Louisiana Tech and Mississippi. Louisiana finished with a 54-hole total of 29-over par (893).

No.28 Mississippi State and UAB tied for the tournament championship at three-over par (867). No.48 South Alabama (+12, 876), Southeastern La. (+16, 880) and Cincinnati (+24, 888) round out the top 5 teams at the Old Waverly Collegiate Challenge.

Cincinnati's Emerson Newsome held on with a round of even-par (72) to claim individual medalist honors with a final score of six-under par (210).

Freshman Ross Davis posted his second consecutive top 25 finish placing in a tie for 20th at six-over par (222) after carding his second score of 72 at the event.

Brandt Garon finished just outside of the top 25 in a tie for 27th with a three-round total of eight-over (224), while fellow senior Yohann Vora rounded out the scoring for the Cajuns in a tie for 44th place at 13-over par (229).

"This gives us some good momentum headed into conference play," Sliman added. "They key is going to be that we have to show up and play. We are going to have to see a collective effort and cut down the mistakes."

Louisiana returns to action on April 22-24 as the Ragin' Cajuns head to Muscle Schoals, Ala. for the Sun Belt Conference Championship. For info and updates follow the golf team on twitter @CajunGolf.
