Santorum talks Oil and Gas in Lafayette

"I'm here in Lafayette, Louisiana tonight!"

That's how Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum began his speech to dozens of followers at the Lafayette Hilton on Pinhook.
He's the first presidential candidate this year to stop by the Hub City.
.
"When gas prices go up, the quality of life is affected," Santorum said. "This is the heart of the oil and gas industry on the Gulf Coast."

Santorum put Lafayette in the national spotlight, highlighting the importance of the oil and gas industry that gave the Hub City its nickname.

"I think that's what you're going to see from a lot of these candidates," Parish President Joey Durel said. "If you want to put people back to work, the oil and gas industry is a great place to start."

So far, no word from Santorum's opponents on whether they're planning campaign stops in Acadiana but Durel says this race is a chance to put Lafayette on the map.

"We have an opportunity to shine that light on the fact that we have a healthy economy in large part because of the oil and gas industry," Durel said.

As Santorum hits the campaign trail again, wherever he goes, his crew will need to fill-up with gas and much of that fuel comes from the Gulf Coast.
