SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego's City Council has banned so-called
"floatopia" parties where people booze it up on inner tubes
The council voted 8-0 Monday to close the loophole on a beach
alcohol ban that was approved by voters in November 2008.
Several speakers told the council that the ban was an
overreaction and would drive away tourists. But council members -
with strong support from police officials - said it was a question
of public safety and the cost of policing the crowds. Attendance at
"floatopia" events has reached up to 6,000 people, requiring
dozens of rescues.
The ban takes effect immediately.
