The Cargill salt mine in Avery Island remains down at this hour after a piece of equipment malfunctioned.
A spokesman says the hoist that brings the salt up from below the mine got damaged.
Because that opening is one of the safety evacuation routes, the mine was closed around nine this morning.
No one was inured. 200 people are employed there, but it is unclear how many were in the mine at the time of the accident.
The Mine Safety and Health Administration was notified and will examine the mine.
Officials say they hope to be back up and running tomorrow.
