A new half-cent sales tax that would be used to boost teacher pay is among several topics up for discussion at Tuesday's Terrebonne Parish School Board meeting.
Superintendent Philip Martin tells The Courier he believes board members will agree to propose the tax for voters' consideration on Dec. 6.
The tax was among several recommendations made in February by a community task force formed after voters last year defeated a property tax to pay for Terrebonne public school employee raises and buildings. The deadline for getting propositions on the ballot is Oct. 21.
Shoppers in Terrebonne now pay a sales tax of 9 cents on the dollar.
Raising the sales tax by a half cent is estimated to provide the district about $12 million in recurring revenue.
