Devery Henderson will award nine seniors from Opelousas High, Northwest High, Port Barre High, & Eunice High scholarships. There will be seven academic and two athletic scholarships awarded. The Devery Henderson Scholarship Fund was established March 2010 to promote higher education, encourage students to pursue their dreams, and provide financial assistance. In March, Devery held his first event to raise money for his scholarship fund. He matched every dollar raised. Giving back to his alma mater, Opelousas High and area schools was his #1 priority when he established the Devery Henderson Scholarship Fund. Applications were given to Opelousas High, Magnet Academy for Cultural Arts (MACA), Northwest High, Port Barre High, and Eunice High at the beginning of April. Students had until April 28, 2010 to return their completed application, essay, and letters of recommendation. After receiving the applications, the scholarship committee and Devery met to review each applicant. Out of the five schools, nine applicants applied and they all met the criteria. Devery decided to award each applicant a scholarship. He thought it was ironic that nine students applied. At Opelousas High he wore the #9 and in college at LSU as well. He continues to wear the #9 on his jersey for the New Orleans Saints, #19. He is ecstatic about giving back to our next generation and believes it is very important. There will be a representative attending graduation on May 14, 2010 at each school to present the scholarship recipients with an award.
