January 22, 2013- Safety Management Systems recently held a graduation ceremony for its eighth ARD class.
The ARD program-which stands for Attraction, Recruitment, and Deployment-was designed by SMS in an effort to produce thoroughly prepared health, safety, and environment technicians for the oil & gas industry. The six month program is an internship where students are taught, trained, and mentored to identify unsafe acts and conditions while providing practical solutions for minimizing those risks.
The three-phased ARD program was developed with practical application in mind. The graduation ceremony follows the first phase-six weeks of job specific training in the construction, drilling and well service disciplines. The 12 graduating students have since begun the second phase of training which is a four month mentoring phase where they shadow an experienced and tenured SMS safety technician in the field. In the last phase, the ARD student is assigned to their own location and an SMS field supervisor conducts quality compliance evaluations to gauge their proficiency.
"In such a challenging field it is imperative that we provide our ARD students with the education, training, and tools that they need to succeed," SMS President Scott Domingue said. "I am confident that we have created the most complete and well-structured program available."
