Sabine wildlife refuge to close Thurs, Fri

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A large portion of the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge will be closed Thursday and Friday during Feral Hog Management Operations.

The refuge will be closed, including all boat access, from Highway 27, from the north boundary to the south boundary, westward to Sabine Lake. All recreation areas along Highway 27 will remain open, as well as boat launches with access to the east, toward Calcasieu Lake.

During the closure, crews will work to protect 125,790 acres of fresh, intermediate and brackish refuge marshes from feral hog induced erosion, migratory bird habitat destruction and migratory bird nesting mortality. Marsh habitat has been compromised because of the hogs extensive foraging for food. Since 1990, feral hog have been primarily reported on the western side of the refuge known as Marceaux Island.
