St. Landry voters will choose between two school board candidates in a run-off election in three weeks.
Back on the voter ballot is Hazel Sias, a retired educator, and accountant Stephen Woods. He's currently holding the seat after Quincy Richard was ousted after being found guilty of trying to bribe a superintendent candidate.
Woods, an accountant, said he has already made great strides at Southwest Elementary School.
"I think we have accomplished a great deal, I try and help people to help finance their lives, this is my livelihood right here," Woods said.
Sias has worked the parish school system for more than 40 years as teacher and guidance counselor.
"I feel I know what the kids need and what the teachers need because I've worked with both sides," Sias said.
Both candidates said, if elected, the first order of business is balancing the budget and getting more training for teachers
"Retaining and recruiting new teachers, that's why I went into education because I love kids and I think that they deserve an opportunity to get the best education that they can possibly get," Sias said.
"It's to get our school back up to an A-grade," Woods said. "I care about all of St. Landry Parish and our whole school system, and that's the key. It's working with everyone to make sure that we provide the best quality education that we can for our young people."
The run-off election is Saturday, May 3.
