Ruling delayed in Avoyelles desegregation case

MARKSVILLE, La. (AP) - The Avoyelles Parish school district's quest to get out from under a decades-old desegregation order has been delayed.
The Town-Talk reports the board's motion to be declared unitary in facilities was denied by federal court.
U.S. District Judge Dee Drell denied the motion pending the submission of additional materials and input. Drell also denied the motion to approve the school board's capital outlay plan in his Sept. 24 ruling.
Drell gave the Avoyelles Parish School Board 60 days to come to an agreement and provide documentation regarding a plan for the Bunkie Elementary gym. Superintendent Dwayne Lemoine said Wednesday that seems to be the big sticking point with facilities.
