Arnaudville resident Jamie Huval submitted a petition to recall Arnaudville Police Chief Richard Mizzi to the St. Landry Parish Registrar of Voters.
If the registrar certifies the petition, it will be forwarded to the Louisiana Secretary of State's office, and then forwarded to Gov. Bobby Jindal's office.
The leader of the petition drive, Jamie Huval, says that Arnaudville's town attorney announced last night during the town's board of aldermen meeting that Mizzi had filed for his retirement and would be stepping down from office.
Despite the reports that Mizzi is resigning his post, officials at the Secretary of State's Office say that they have not received a resignation letter from Mizzi. According to spokesperson Meg Casper, a public offial must send a letter to the Secretary of State's office notifying them of his or her resignation to vacate the seat.
Casper adds that an elected official may file for and collect retirement pay from the state's retirement system while still holding office.
Officials with the Louisiana Employees' Retirement System has no membership record for Mizzi. KATC also contacted the Municipal Police Employees' Retirement System. No one was available at the time of the call.
