Rider falls from float in New Roads after parade ends, pronounced dead at scene

NEW ROADS (AP) - In Pointe Coupee Parish, Mardi Gras revelry turned deadly after a rider fell from a float that had participated in the New Roads parade.

State police say 58-year-old James Lee, of New Roads, was riding on the tongue of a float that was being pulled by a Ford F-250 after the parade ended about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Troopers say Lee apparently slipped and fell to the ground as the float was being towed forward and was crushed. Another truck following the float also struck Lee.

The coroner's office pronounced him dead on the scene.

Troopers do not suspect alcohol to have been a factor in the accident. However, both drivers voluntarily submitted breath samples that showed they had no detectable alcohol in their systems. Investigators have also submitted a sample of Lee's blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
