ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - Returning Sheriff William Earl Hilton has told deputies their jobs are safe.

He also introduced former Alexandria police chief Tommy Cicardo as his chief of detectives. That's the job Cicardo held in Alexandria before becoming chief of police. He says he's missed police work since he resigned in 2003.

Hilton officially becomes chief on Monday. He spoke during his swearing-in Friday.

The Town Talk reports that Hilton also said he will get the former Louisiana Youth Academy ready to house 137 state prisoners now at the J. Levy Dabadie Correctional Center. Hilton says the minimum-security prison will close by July 27, because Gov. Bobby Jindal vetoed money to run it.

Hilton says the state will pay the parish $23.49 per prisoner each day.
