Restaurant Blaze: Iberia seafood landmark vows to rebuild

Fire investigators are trying to determine what caused an early morning fire at a New Iberia restaurant, Jane's Seafood, which has been on Jane St. for more than 20 years.

The fire started around 2 a.m. and the cause of the fire is under investigation. However foul play has been ruled out. The flames quickly spread across the restaurant, and took firefighters two hours to get it under control.

"It was pretty bad," said Vu Tran, the Jane's Seafood manager.

For now, only a leaky roof and the burnt belongings of Jane's Seafood remain. Tran's family owns Jane's Seafood, and he keeps a close watch over the restaurant. Despite the fact that he lives just feet away, he learned of the fire when the alarm company called him and he looked outside.

"So I peek out to the back of the window and I see flames, so I said call the fire department," Tran said.

Once Tran saw the fire, he did everything he could to save the restaurant. He even sprayed a water hose to to stop the flames.

"The most disappointing thing is probably my employees, my work force. Now, they're without a job," Tran said, noting that business has come to a complete stop at the busiest time of the year.

Lent is just days away, and for the first time in two decades, Jane's Seafood will be closed.

"The disappointment to our customers, you know they rely on us you know for a great restaurant and all that, to bring their family and all and we enjoy serving them," Tran said.

Tran said the plan is to see if they can find a temporary location for the restaurant, and then eventually bring back Jane's Seafood to Jane St.

"We're going to do that, we can't let our customers down and the community. So we're going to rebuild. We're going to be back," Tran vowed.
