A portion of the Bayou Teche is no longer a candidate for the Natural and Historic Scenic Rivers program. A resolution introduced by Carencro Representative Stephen Ortego and approved by the Senate removes the portion of the bayou running through St. Mary and Iberia Parishes from consideration. This move came after residents in those parishes voiced concerns about the effect on industry they felt the designation could bring.
The portion of the Bayou Teche flowing through St. Martin and St. Landry Parishes is still being considered for inclusion in the Scenic Rivers program. The resolution calls for further study of the designation for this section of the bayou. Ortego's resolution says the designation would "help to increase recreation and tourism on the bayou."
