ABBEVILLE, La. (AP) - The Community Foundation of Acadiana says businesses, individuals and local governments have pitched in nearly $300,000 since October to keep Palmetto Island State Park open in Vermilion Parish.
Construction on the $13 million park was complete this year, but state budget cuts nearly kept it closed before it ever opened.
Lt. Gov. Scott Angelle managed to pull together $400,000 to open the park Oct. 28 and keep it open three months. He said it will be up to businesses, individuals and local governments to contribute funds to keep Palmetto Island State Park open beyond the initial three-month period.
