Repairs to the Leland Bowman Lock are ahead of schedule. One of the gate structures was removed after a barge hit it last year in October. Thanks to a mild winter and little rain, repairs are about a month ahead of schedule, Lockmaster Jerry Stoute. Starting Feb. 6 through Feb. 14, the lock will close to inspect and repair equipment that sits below water. The inspection is necessary before reinstalling the gates, and during this time no traffic will be allowed to pass through the structure.
The lock will shut down Feb. 27 for reinstallment, and Stoute says they hope to be done by March 3. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers moved the gate to a dry dock in Morgan City where it's being repaired and repainted.
