Some students at the New Iberia campus of the South Louisiana Community College will not be able to cast their ballots today due to a voter registration drive mishap. Christine Peyton, spokesperson for SLCC, says the drive was organized by the campuses' student government associations. Peyton says the New Iberia SGA representative reported to officials she turned in the registration forms at the Registrar of Voters Office in Lafayette. However, Lafayette Registrar of Voters Charlene Meaux says she has no record of anyone from SLCC delivering the registration forms to her office. Iberia Parish Registrar of Voters Mildred Adams says her office did not receive the applications, either.
Meaux added that state law requires organizers to sign a waiver when they deliver voter registration forms. Meaux also stated that registrars of voters are required to forward out-of-parish registration forms to their appropriate parishes when they are encountered. Peyton said SLCC has only received complaints from students at the New Iberia campus.
