CALCASIEU PARISH - Red Cross volunteers are assisting a family of 13, including nine children, who lived at 803 Avenue B in Bell City and whose house was destroyed today by fire.
Based on the residents' needs, the Red Cross is providing aid for shelter, food, clothing, personal hygiene products and comfort items, including Mickey Mouse dolls, for the children. The Red Cross also has confirmed referrals to the Salvation Army, Christian World Ministries, First Christian Church and the Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster.
The volunteers are supporting firefighters with canteen services, including water and snacks.
"We're deeply saddened for those affected," said Tony Credeur, community chapters executive for the South Louisiana Red Cross. "As we continue to help them, we want others to take action to minimize the risk of a home fire."
The Red Cross recommends two easy steps to help protect your home and loved ones from a fire: get a smoke alarm and create a fire escape plan.
Four of the Red Cross volunteers on the scene of today's fire are members of the chapter's Disaster Action Team, a group of specially trained volunteers who respond to local disasters when called upon at any time of the day or night.
