COTE BLANCHE ISLAND, La. (December 17, 2013) - The area's two biggest food banks, St. Mary Outreach in Morgan City and Solomon House in New Iberia, received the single biggest donations of the holiday season today -- $6,238 each from the Cote Blanche Salt Mine. The mine contributed $1 for each ton its crews mined on December 11, the mine's designated "food bank hoist day". The miners reached 12,476 tons over the day's shifts.
"We are so grateful for the support of North American Salt Company. The company's hard work and the generosity of the miners will provide gifts, food and emergency financial assistance this Christmas season for families in need," said Minister Ellen Nora, director of Solomon House. "This donation will aid us tremendously in continuing the programs and services we provide to the community."
The holiday checks were delivered on Tuesday by Don Brumm, vice president, operations, for Cote Blanche Mine, and Carey Landry, vice president of the mine workers' union.
"We are glad to be able to help our neighbors in need," said Brumm. "We are fortunate to have a strong business at a time when many people in the community are struggling. Cote Blanche Mine and our parent company, Compass Minerals, are committed to helping the local food banks."
With miners 1,500 feet underground 24/7, Cote Blanche Salt Mine produces salt that is shipped up the Mississippi River to be used for highway de-icing in 18 states throughout the winter. For the last five years the company has committed to contributing $1 for each ton mined on its "food bank hoist day". This year's hoist was the biggest yet, 11% more than in a year ago.
"This is something we can do for those who can use the help this time of year, and we are proud to step up," said Landry of the United Steel Workers Union, which represents Cote Blanche's miners. "We want to do what we can for the community at Christmas."
"Support from the miners and management at Cote Blanche Mine came just in time for Christmas. It's a perfect example of the spirit of giving and the community in action," said Kay Raymond of St. Mary Outreach. "With so many struggling, the needs continue to grow. We are very grateful."
