THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - Nicholls State University has named the gymnasium at its new recreation center after a Nicholls alumnus who helped rally support for the center.
Nicholls said in a news release that Michael Childs was a Student Government Association senator more than 10 years ago when a proposal for a student-funded recreation center failed by fewer than 20 student votes.
Childs collected 1,000 signatures on a petition to put the recreation center back on the student ballot in the fall of 2002. It passed overwhelmingly. The state-of-the-art recreation center, named for the late businessman Harold Callais, opened in August 2012.
Childs, who attended Nicholls from 2001-2003, died in July 2006 while trying to rescue someone from drowning.
The ceremony dedicating the gym to Childs was held Saturday.
