It was about a week ago that the Dugas family thought they lost everything. All of their Christmas presents were stolen with no hope of getting them back.
It was a nightmare for the family, similar to the Dr. Suess story "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," but just like the story, the family is getting a happy ending tonight.
"I thought my kids weren't going to have a Christmas," said Kaylin Dugas, the mother of four children, all under the age of seven.
The Crawfish Hut in Rayne began collecting presents on Friday. It only took three days, but people in the community felt compelled to help out this single mother.
"On Saturday morning, we had presents at the door outside before we were even open. It was huge and we just want to thank everyone who reached out and did their part to help," said Adam Gates, an employee at the Crawfish Hut.
"God sent a miracle for my children," said Kaylin.
Now, Kaylin and her kids will wake up Chistmas morning to find dozens of presents under their tree.Only one of Kaylin's kids was at the Crawfish Hut, helping to load their car with gifts. The other three have no idea that the community came together to make sure they have a Christmas to remember.
Kaylin wrote this note to share with everyone who helped her family:
"My kids and I would like to thank God and everyone who gave donations to help my kids have a blessed Christmas. I also would like to thank everyone who sent their prayers comforting words during this time. Once again, thank you all and God Bless. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year. From Kaylin, Kaitlyn, Jeremy, Exavier, and Zi'Taveon Dugas."
