ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - The Rapides Parish Police Jury has declared a state of emergency because of the recent fire at the Rigolette Road Bridge.
The 300-foot bridge that spans Rigolette Bayou in the Tioga area was badly damaged by a fire on March 26. The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
The fire burned the timber supports and left the bridge too dangerous to travel across.
The police jury passed several motions
Monday in relation to the bridge. One motion seeks emergency funds from the state and federal governments to rebuild it.
Police Jury President Richard Billings put the cost at repairing the bridge at about $250,000, if the parish is allowed to use its own workers and equipment.
