ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - Rapides Parish voters are being asked on Nov. 6 to approve a $23 million bond issue, backed by a 2.5-mill property tax, to fund renovations and upgrades to the Rapides Coliseum. Voters also are being asked to pass a 1-mill property tax to fund coliseum operations over the next 20 years. The Town Talk reports the coliseum has struggled financially in recent years.
The renovation and upgrade project is designed to modernize the nearly 50-year-old coliseum and make it competitive with newer venues in other markets.
Plans include giving the arena a new, modern exterior for curb appeal; replacing the seating and expanding capacity by more than 3,000; a complete overhaul of the facility's technology, including new lighting, sound, video and electrical systems.
