The Plaquemines Parish government says southbound lanes along a 7-mile stretch of the parish's main evacuation route will be closed for most of the hurricane season while state crews raise it to prevent future flooding.
Parish spokeswoman Caitlin Campbell says the northbound lanes on that part of Louisiana Highway 23 are being converted to two-way traffic during the work, which begins Thursday and runs through Nov. 1.
The area being raised is about halfway between Belle Chasse and Pointe a la Hache.
During the work, drivers will need permits from the state Department of Transportation and Development for loads more than 10 feet wide.
