RUSTON, La. - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team fell to the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters, 51-44 at the Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston, La. The Cajuns drop to 4-4 in eight non-conference games, and are 1-3 on the road in the young season.
Tech's Chrisstasia Walter led all scorers with 14 points and Whitney Fraizer chipped in with a double-double, scoring 10 points and adding 13 assists in the winning effort.
"We didn't come out ready offensively," head coach Garry Brodhead said after the game. "We didn't adjust defensively and we made too many turnovers. When you shoot 15% from three it is difficult."
The Cajuns saw three players score double-figures. Jaylyn Gordon led the team with 11 points and five rebounds,Robbie Brown added 10 points and six rebounds and Sylvana Okde scored 10 points, all in the second half.
Junior Robbie Brown led the Cajuns offensively in the first half, with a season-high eight points through the first 20 minutes, with four of those coming in a 6-2 run at the end of the half, cutting the Lady Techsters largest lead of the half down to 23-15.
The two teams combined for 0-of-19 from behind the three-point line in the first half, but made adjustments to add a combined six-of-18 in the game.
"It wasn't a pretty game on either side," Brodhead added. "We have to get back into the gym and work on our offense. This was a disappointing loss because I thought we should have taken this one."
Tech came out strong in the second half and stretched their eight-point halftime lead to a game-high 17 points with 11:33 remaining in the game.
The Cajuns found their own offensive spark moments later, with six quick points from Gordon, to chip away at the Lady Techsters' lead.
Okde hit her second three-pointer in the game to cut Tech's lead down to five with 3:30 remaining in the game, for her 10th point of the game.
Tech would pull away after that, finishing with a 7-2 run, to win 51-44.
The Cajuns outscored Tech 29-28 in the second half, with Okde scoring 10 points and Gordon adding six, shooting 40% as a team (12-of-30) in the final 20 minutes.
"In the second half we came out sluggish but got going with some energy," Brodhead added. "We switched up to our zone defense and got them out of rhythm to cut it to five, we just didn't get it done."
The Ragin' Cajuns will now finish up their road trip at New Orleans, next Saturday, Dec. 14. They will return home for one more game before the holiday break, taking on Alcorn State on Dec. 19 at the Earl K. Long Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
