JENNINGS, La. (AP) - Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain says a
Jefferson Davis Parish horse has been confirmed to have rabies.
The horse, a 6-year-old thoroughbred
mare from the Jennings area, was taken to LSU's veterinary school
in Baton Rouge on June 27 after exhibiting abnormal facial
twitching symptoms.
Strain said the horse was euthanized after the symptoms
worsened, and a subsequent necropsy verified the horse had rabies.
He said few people vaccinate their horses for rabies, but horses
like all mammals can contract the disease.
