BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - No surprises have emerged so far as the Oct. 22 elections sign-up period heads into its second day.
All seven of Louisiana's statewide elected officials, including Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal, qualified for re-election on the opening day.
Only Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne and Secretary of State Tom Schedler have attracted well-funded opponents so far. Dardenne faces Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser, and Schedler has a challenge from House Speaker Jim Tucker. All the men are Republicans.
Meanwhile, in other races, more than two-thirds of state lawmakers have filed their paperwork to run again for their seats, and six of the eight elected members of the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education have signed up for re-election bids.
Qualifying continues through Thursday.
