The Louisiana Public Service Commission will will vote today to lower the cost of collect phone calls from prison inmates. Calls from Louisiana jails average 30 cents per minute. That does not include unauthorized fees. If approved, rates would decrease by about 7.5 cents per minute. Louisiana sheriffs oppose the measure because they say they would lose significant funding. St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz, who will attend today's meeting, says his office would lose $32,000 annually if rates are lowered.
