NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Prosecutors ask a federal court to delay a
racketeering trial for a former Louisiana lawmaker and a longtime
political operative.
Trial is scheduled Monday for former state Rep. Renee Gill Pratt
and Mose Jefferson, a brother of former Congressman William
Jefferson.
But on Thursday, prosecutors asked the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of
Appeals for a delay.
They want more time to appeal U.S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle's
decision that they cannot question Mose Jefferson about his
previous bribery convictions.
Jefferson and Gill Pratt are charged with conspiring to steal
hundreds of thousands of dollars in government grant money
earmarked for charitable and education programs.
Jefferson's sister, former New Orleans assessor Betty Jefferson,
and her daughter have pleaded guilty.
