Prosecutors in St. Martin Parish say the trial of two women accused of killing a Breaux Bridge woman could begin in 2014. Heller Dupuis and her daughter, Toni, are both charged with first-degree murder in the death of 83-year-old Jessie Messex.
Assistant District Attorney Chester Cedars says Toni Dupuis will not face the death penalty due to her mental capacity. However, he says the death penalty is still an option in Heller Dupuis's case, and that, he says, is what's holding up the trial.
Messex's body was found in Lake Martin in November 2011. Heller Dupuis is Messex's daughter, and Toni Dupuis is Messex's granddaughter.
A coroner's report determined that Messex was strangled to death.
