Proposed munitions storage facility draws critics

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Residents of Shreveport's Mooretown
neighborhood have voiced their concerns over amunitions storage facility that may be established in their neighborhood.
Weatherford International Ltd. has applied for a zoning permit to store explosives in a warehouse.
State Fire Marshal H. "Butch" Browning said his office would ensure that the building, those who work in it and those who live near it are safe.
Charles Kirkland of the Metropolitan Planning Commission said Weatherford is an international company that services oil and gas drilling companies. Kirkland said the company is seeking a permit to use part of the facility as a storage vault for the explosives used in drilling.
Officials say the type of explosive and the quantity that would be present did not pose a major threat.
