THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - A proposal to reduce the Lafourche Parish School Board's membership from 15 to nine failed within minutes after its introduction.
The suggestion arose Tuesday as a committee discussed plans to redraw the board's voting districts, a process that happens every 10 years to account for population changes reflected by the U.S. Census.
The Daily Comet reports the panel is reviewing three different district maps in an effort to find one that would account for those changes.
Board members have said they want to try to keep communities intact within the new districts and, when possible, try to prevent incumbents from running against each other.
The committee voted to have the board conduct a hearing at its next meeting April 4 to seek input from residents on the maps.
