The walls are going up and slowly covering a large steel structure at 2424 North University Avenue in Upper Lafayette. It's a building that's attracting attention by those passing by.

"It's 15,000 square feet, and it's funny, sometimes when I'm standing in the front, people will stop and question me if it will be a Wal-Mart," said Gene Walters.

The building will not be a Wal-Mart, but rather the future home of Walters Funeral Home. It's the city's first, new funeral home company to come to town in more than 20 years.

Walters will be the funeral director and has 40 years of experience, locally in the business. In keeping with Acadiana tradition, it's a business that will be family-owned and operated.

"My son is coming into the business with me, we'll be running a true family-owned facility," Walters said.

The funeral home will offer traditional services including cremation and pre-arrangements. Once complete the facility will include a chapel and parlors, able to accommodate up to three families at a time.

Weather permitting, the Walters Funeral Home should be open by April, or even sooner.
