BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The nonprofit corporation that runs two private hospitals in New Orleans is taking over the operations of the city's LSU hospital and the new $1 billion public hospital set to open in two years.
Health and Hospitals Secretary Bruce Greenstein and LSU hospital chief Frank Opelka announced the arrangement Monday. Additional announcements are planned for LSU facilities in Houma and Lafayette.
The Louisiana Children's Medical Center, which operates Children's Hospital and Touro Infirmary, will lease the Interim LSU Public Hospital and the new 424-bed hospital under construction.
Greenstein says the lease money will be used to draw down federal matching dollars for health care services, to keep all existing beds open. The arrangement needs approval from the LSU Board of Supervisors and lawmakers.
