A prison operator plans to build a $20 million, 400-bed transfer center for immigration detainees at England Airpark.
The GEO Group said Monday the center will house detainees as they await deportation to their native countries.
U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu's office says the center would bring 150 new jobs to the Alexandria area.
The GEO Group, based in Florida, has a contract with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
According to the firm's website, the facility is expected to be finished by the end of 2014.
