BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team hit five home runs and combined for 19 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the WKU Lady Toppers, winning 8-4, and 11-5, at the WKU Softball Complex on Saturday.
The Cajuns improved to 27-6-1, and a conference-best 8-0 record in Sun Belt Conference games with the sweep, clinching a series win against the defending conference champions. The Cajuns have also won their last 12 games, and 19 of their last 20 games, dating back to February 23.
Lexie Elkins and Shelbi Redfearn each homered once in each game, with Elkins driving in six runs in the doubleheader and Redfearn driving in four. Freshman Haley Hayden also homered in the first game, adding to her conference lead with 12 on the season.
Christina Hamilton and Jordan Wallace each picked up complete game victories, with Hamilton winning the opener and Wallace winning the nightcap. Hamilton allowed four runs on five hits with five strikeouts, and Wallace allowed five runs on five hits and seven strikeouts.
The Cajuns jumped ahead in the first inning of game one, grabbing a 2-0 lead on a Hayden home run. It was the fourth time this season that Natalie Fernandez opened the game by getting on base and Hayden sent her home by way of a long ball.
The Lady Toppers cut the deficit to 4-3, with one run in the third and two in the fourth, but the Cajuns came back with home runs in back-to-back innings to pull ahead 8-3 and seal the game.
Elkins hit a three-run homer in the fourth and Redfearn led off the fifth with a solo shot for both their first of the doubleheader.
WKU drew first blood in game two with a bases-loaded walk in the first inning, but the Cajuns surged ahead with a two-run third inning and a six-run fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead.
The eight-run burst was keyed by Redfearn and Elkins' second homers of the day. Redfearn hit a two-run homer in the third and Elkins started the six-run rally in the fourth with a three-run homer.
The Cajuns picked up the other three runs with a two-run double by Shellie Landry and an RBI single from Sara Corbello.
WKU cut the Cajuns' lead to 8-5 in the fifth and sixth inning keyed by a three-run homer from Preslie Cruce in the sixth, but the Cajuns lengthened the gap again in the top of the seventh with a pair of run-scoring doubles by Haley Hayden (two runs) and Samantha Walsh, just one batter removed, to make it 11-5.
The Cajuns and Lady Toppers will return to the field to finish up the three-game series tomorrow at noon, where the Cajuns will look to improve to 9-0 on Sun Belt games. The Cajuns will continue this road trip with a midweek rematch of last season's NCAA Baton Rouge Regional when they take on Northwestern State in Natchitoches, on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
