NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Entergy New Orleans scrambled to get power back to tens of thousands of customers and to find out what caused the power failure.
Spokesman Philip Allison says 34,000 customers were without power about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. As of 5 p.m., the outage number was at about 2,000.
He says crews hope to have everyone restored by 7 p.m.
Allison says the failures appear related but were in different parts of the city. Most were between Gentilly and the University of New Orleans, stretching from there into eastern New Orleans.
Allison says the company was focusing on getting the lights back on before looking into the cause.
Affected customers included Medard Nelson Charter School, which canceled after-school programs.
