Port Barre Elementary School students continue to mourn the loss of one of their kindergartener classmates. Five year old Karen Stoute passed away yesterday.
She was critically injured in last week's crash---when a tractor trailer slammed into the back of her St. Landry Parish School Bus. Eleven Port Barre Elementary student's were on board the bus involved in the accident. Only four have made it back to school.
Port Barre Elementary Principal , Mazie Taylor, said "she was a typical kindergarten student-shy, academically very well."
Taylor said Karen came to school everyday with a smile on her face.
"She'd smile and do the little wave with her hands like this," Taylor said.
Taylor said Karen was just starting to get more acclimated to school.
Taylor explained, "she came to us in August, and she was getting more used to the situation."
Students who were on board Bus 24 with Karen are starting to come back to school. All of them are going to counseling.
"We've had four of the eleven from the bus that they are counseling now," Taylor said. "We have others that the parents are requesting for counseling and we will have that taken care of."
Taylor says it's hard for the children to understand why Karen isn't here.
"They just question her absence and the counselor has already been the classroom and talked to class and pulled out individuals," she said.
Counselors will be on campus as long as needed.
