PORT ALLEN, La. (AP) - The Port Allen City Council has appointed Joseph Roger Bergeron to fill a vacant seat on the six-member council.
The Advocate reports the council acted one week after Mayor Derek Lewis resigned and members voted to appoint Councilman R.J. Loupe to succeed Lewis.
During Wednesday's council meeting, Councilman Hugh Riviere nominated Bergeron to take Loupe's former spot on the council.
Riviere say Bergeron spent 16 years with the Louisiana Department of Revenue and served as the revenue director for West Baton Rouge Parish.
Bergeron currently serves on the Port Allen Board of Adjustment.
The shuffling of the mayor's seat and city council memberships came about after Lewis resigned from office June 28 and then drove to Baton Rouge federal court where he pleaded guilty to a racketeering charge.
