Political Commercial Controversy

It's less than two weeks away from election day, but there's a heated controversy here in Lafayette. It's all over a political commercial in the race for U.S Congressman. Here at KATC we are caught in the middle of the commercial. The ad uses a clip of our newscast in a very controversial way. The latest ad by the Charles Boustany Camp accuses the Jeff Landry Campaign of a lie and used our newscast to get their message across. We did a report on a brochure that was handed out, that had false information regarding Dr. Boustany.
In the story, however, we were very clear Jeff Landry's Campaign had nothing to do with the brochure.
However, in Boustany's new ad, he blames Landry for the mis-information. It was the Lafayette Tea Party, who took accountability and changed the brochure.
"This is one endorsement of several that got by us," said Joyce Linde Coordinator of The Tea Party of Lafayette.
As we've told you before, these candidates can say pretty much anything in their ads. We're not allowed to refuse them because they may be inaccurate. Dr. Boustany asked us to pull an ad because he felt it was wrong. However, we're not allowed to because it's endorsed by a candidate.
"There's no ambiguity, if it's from a bona fide candidate not organization, but from the candidate," said Dr. Bill Davie UL Media Law/Ethics Professor.
We reached out to the Boustany camp for comment but haven't heard back as of news time.
