Police Standoff Ends

Subject Barricades Self in Hotel Room

On October 7, 2009, at approximately 2:30 am, officers with the Lafayette Police Department responded to 2215 NE Frontage Road regarding a subject in a hotel room threatening self injury. Family members advised police that the subject was armed with a handgun would possibly harm himself. Officers attempted to make contact with the subject, a 57 year old male of Lake Arthur, but the subject refused to cooperate. The Lafayette Police Department's SWAT and Negotiator Teams were contacted and arrived on scene. Negotiators were unable to establish contact with the subject at which time the SWAT Team entered the room aided with the dispersion of pepper spray. The subject, identified as Wayne Lopez (57) of Lake Arthur, was found unconscious and taken into custody. A handgun was located in the room by officers. Lopez was transported to an area hospital for treatment and evaluation.

A standoff has ended at a local motel.  Lafayette Police tell us, negotiators were at the Howard Johnson Motel on Evangeline Thruway.  They say an armed man locked himself inside a room and was threatening to kill himself.  After a period of time with no response from the room, police broke into the room after deploying a chemical agent.  They found the man unconscious and pulled him from the room.  He was sent to a local hospital with family members for a medical evaluation.
