Police say neighbor finds 3-year-old alongside Eunice highway

Police say a Eunice woman was cited for failing to supervise her 3-year-old child after police say a neighbor found the toddler standing near a stop sign on a four-lane highway.

Rebecca Owens, 29, 251 Aymond St., Eunice, was arrested on a charge of improper supervision of a minor. Eunice Police say they and a passing Louisiana State Probation and Parole officer picked up the child at the corner of Aymond Street and La. Hwy. 13.

The Eunice Police Department says it received a report of an unsupervised child near the intersection of Cotton and Aymond streets. Once on the scene, officers say they spoke to a witness who said he observed the child standing near the stop sign alone without any adults. The witness said he ran across the road to meet the child before he'd walk into traffic.

Police said they found Owens at home and, when questioned by police, they said she provided the names of other people who were supposed to be watching the child.

Police said those people told officers the child was never placed with them to babysit.

Police say Owens was then taken into custody and transported to the Eunice Police Department office. Police say she was booked and released by summons with a court date set for Oct. 28 in Eunice City Court.

Police say Owens has a prior arrest from November for no child restraints, driving without headlights, driving under suspension, switched license plates and registration required.
