The Vermilion Parish Police Jury may soon allow an outside company to handle the parish's garbage collection duties.
According to police jury president Nathan Granger, the police jury will issue requests for qualifications for companies interested in picking up trash in the area. Granger says this will allow the police jury to find out how much companies will charge to take over the parish's trash operations overhead, including trucks, routes, and, possibly, employees.
Earlier this year, garbage collection in Vermilion Parish became backlogged after multiple garbage trucks broke down and were taken out of service. The affected trucks were repaired and put back into service in June, allowing service to return to normal.
Granger says if all goes according to plan, the parish could end its garbage collection operations by the beginning of 2014.
