JENNINGS, La. (AP) - The Jefferson Davis Parish Police Jury wants the state Legislature to approve an increase in court costs to help fund the coroner's, district judge and district attorney's offices.
The Police Jury is asking the Legislature to consider imposing a $10 increase on all criminal cases, including traffic violations, in district court.
District Attorney Michael Cassidy tells the American Press the increase would generate about $100,000 annually, with half of the revenues going to the criminal court fund to defray the cost of operating the judge's and prosecutor's offices. He says the other half would be used to fund coroner's office operations, including salary and expenses.
