The Vermilion Parish Police Jury has set into motion changing its bar closing ordinance. Police juror Cloris Boudreaux requested the parish attorney draft an ordinance that would change the closing time of bars outside of city limits from 4:00 A. M. to 2:00 A. M. The police jury will discuss the ordinance at it's meeting next Wednesday.
Currently, all Vermilion Parish municipalities except for Maurice have ordinances requiring bars to close at 2:00 A. M. Maurice Mayor Wayne Theriot says his town has no intention to put bar closing times on its agenda. Currently, bars in Maurice must shut down by 3:00 A. M. Touchet says that ordinance has been in place since 1982, making it the first town in the parish to impose such a regulation. Touchet says the town's law works, and the closing time issue is one for the police jury to consider. The mayor says a change would be considered only after the police jury passed its own ordinance and after seeing what that law's affects on Maurice would be.
