Police: Husband shoots wife at a family gathering after she asks him to leave

Just before 10:00 pm Friday evening, Opelousas Police responded to a shooting at a residence in the 200 block of West Prudhomme Street. They say 36-year-old Kerry J. Varis shot his wife, 32-year-old Nancy Varis, once in the head at a family gathering.

According to witnesses, Varis then walked away from the residence and shot himself in the head. Police say the revolver believed to have been used was located next to Varis' body. Nancy Varis was taken by ambulance to the hospital where she died a short time later.

The couple leaves behind 9 children, ages 18 to 5.

Officers say they responded to this same home at 1:27 am Friday morning because Nancy Varis wanted her husband to leaver her sister's home. Officers say they told him to leave, which he did.

Witnesses allegedly told police Nancy Varis wanted to end the marriage and felt her husband would never carry out the threats he sometimes made towards her.
