Jennings Police busted three suspects, accused of credit card fraud, possibly totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars. Police said officers discovered 70 Visa gift cards hidden in a vehicle's dash board during a routine traffic stop.
Police said they believe the suspects stole the cards from Walmarts along the I-10 corridor, starting in Houston. Deputy Chief Danny Semmes said the suspects then used an electronic device to transfer stolen credit card numbers onto the gift cards, giving them access to other people's credit card or bank accounts.
Semmes said some cards had roughly $10,000 available on them, either as credit or an actual debit card account.
"They actually either have a balance or if it's a debit card it has money on it to begin with. They can go to ATM's and deduct the money from the credit card or debit card or they can purchase items with it," explained Semmes.
Luis Ortega, Rene Valero and Rosa Garcia are now charged with felony charges of money laundering and credit card fraud. The case has been turned over to the federal government.
